SPRING 2000
I first contacted McCullough about the time capsule through an email, thinking they would be digging it up soon if they hadn't already. To my surprise, no one had even heard of it. I tried to find out if anything was being done, but didn't have much info to go on.
I called WMAR, Channel 2 in Baltimore, and inquired about getting my hands on the archived footage. I was told that finding the footage would be time consuming. They suggested I encourage the school to do a press release and if the story was chosen to be covered as a follow up, they would be more than happy to dig out the archive footage. With no interest from the school, the project fell to the side and I soon forgot about it.
SPRING 2002
I contacted McCullough again to find out if anyone had unearthed the time capsule. I was sure since I had generated interest a couple years earlier that someone would have dug it up by this time. Again, I found no interest and little information. They did, however, put me in touch with a teacher who was no longer with the school who confirmed the event for me. That was all the encouragement and validation I needed to start my search again. Unfortunately, I didn't get a response for further information via email and shortly thereafter lost his name and address to a computer virus in my email client.

My grandmother passed away and I found myself in Delaware with a bit of time to spare. I drove over to McCullough and took a walk out to the time capsule burial site with Curt Turner, currently part of the McCullough staff. Joyce Osik, the office staff, and administration was very helpful too, putting me in touch with Bruce Reynolds, the Community Relations Coordinator for the Colonial School District. With his help, I believe we've confirmed that no one has dug up the time capsule to date.
Obviously, the digging is a delicate matter because the school doesn't want to ruin the look of the property and the money that's been invested in making the school look as nice as it does today. I was told that many lost time capsules are on the school grounds and buring them is no longer encouraged by teachers in the district. How sad.

Spoke with Andy Rash, Maintenance Supervisor, on the phone today about visiting the burial site again next time I'm in town and possibly renting a metal detector to find exactly where it is located. I'm not 100% certain its made of metal or has metal in it, so this might not work as well as we could hope.
I had a thougt that perhaps the time capsule was buried in triangulation with the three trees on the site. Directly in the center. The aerial photo shows that the three trees are placed almost equal distance apart in that area. If any alumni can confirm exactly where its buried, please contact me with additional info angela@notorious4.com
I also did some internet research and believe that 1987, not 1985, is the more accurate date of the time capsule burial. I found a state document that declared Friday, April 24, 1987 the first official Arbor Day in Delaware. That would make the hype surrounding this event sensible, don't you think?

Project Time Warp's website release. I hope you enjoy the site!

My brother, Rick, came up with the idea that perhaps the Baltimore Channel 2 (WMAR) was not the station that covered the event. Because they were quite a distance away, it would have been highly unusual for them to cover the event in Delaware. However, the "2" I remember on the live truck could very well have been PBS Channel 12 (WHYY) in Wilmington, DE. Another possibility was a local cable channel 2 that was on air in Delaware in the early 80's. If I could narrow down the exact station, I can try to get a copy of the news coverage of the event.

I have periodically kept up with research and emails trying to gain information over the intenet. A couple nights ago I sent an email to the staff of The News Journal in Delaware asking for help with Project Time Warp. To my surprise, a journalist by the name of Nate had just covered a story about a lost time capsule...
"I just covered a story about an even older time capsule that could not be located on school property at www.delawareonline.com and thought you might find this story of interest. Perhaps we can work on generating some interest in the 1987 capsule and tie it in as a follow up on the 1965 capsule, which they plan to hunt for again in a couple weeks. By the way, I really enjoyed the website on the 1987 event."
You can read Nate's article here. If there's something wrong with your connection to the site, I made a mirror here. Thanks, Nate!
FUTURE UPDATES
Soon I will be establishing a Project Time Warp daily blog. When there is a significant advancement in reaching our goal, I will add information to the site. In the future you will be able to add your comments. You can even post annonymously if you don't wish to be indentified. Again, thanks to everyone for their help and support. |
